State Fare: Where to Go When You Want Good Ol' Southern Comfort Food

Updated: Jun 19, 2019

State Fare opened up almost a couple years ago, serving up scratch-made, homestyle Southern comfort dishes at Memorial City. Here you'll find hearty portions of basically anything considered Southern cuisine. Best part is, mostly everything is made fresh in-house - even their BBQ potato chips!

We came for lunch last week and sampled all the recommended items by the one and only Lisa Gochman, Marketing Director of Cherry Pie Hospitality, the food group behind State Fare, Petite Sweets, Lee's Fried Chicken, Starfish, Pi Pizza, Lee's Creamery, and Ellis Brothers BBQ. It's safe to say we tried the best of the best on the menu (not to say that all the other items aren't great too).

Without further ado, here's a glimpse into the lunch menu at State Fare!

STARTERS

📷

DILL PICKLE DIP || House BBQ potato chips

Using a family recipe, this dill dip is the perfect thing to start your meal.

📷

JIMMY'S "TEXAS RED" BEEF CHILI FRITO PIE || Cheddar, queso blanco, fresh jalapeno

Holy moly, this is a must-try! I mean for starters, who doesn't enjoy a mean frito pie?! Okay, I'll be honest, I've never really been a fan, but State Fare takes the basic frito pie to the next level with their homemade beef chili (which you can actually get in a bowl as well)!

SALADS

📷

AHI TUNA || Sesame crusted, spinach, red onion, sweet soy-ginger dressing, avocado, tomato, cucumber, crisp rice noodles

I'm not an advocate for getting a salad when you're eating out, especially at a place like State Fare, but I'm going to be that person for a minute, because this salad is no ordinary salad. It's super filling, the dressing is packed with flavor, and that tuna is extra delicious!

COCKTAILS

📷

FROZEN COCKTAIL FLIGHT || Margarita, Lavender Lemonade, Peach Sangria, Ocean Water

They also have Bloody Mary flights for brunch. Share with a friend or get one for yourself - no judgement!

📷

STATE FARE MARGARITA || Resposado tequila, habanero infused dry curaco, lime, agave nectar

For if you want to feel like you're sitting on the beach on vacation.

📷

PIMM'S CUP "UP" || Gin, pimm's no.1, strawberry, cucumber, mint, ginger

It's lightly sweet, refreshing, and everything I could ever ask for in a cocktail. Y'all, this might just be my favorite cocktail. Ever.

ENTREES

📷

ROASTED VEGETABLE SHELLS || Mushroom, asparagus, carrot, zucchini, chunky marinara, basil

No meat? No problem! Would recommend for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike!

📷

CHICKEN FRIED RIBEYE STEAK || 1/2 lb hand cut, mashed potatoes, bacony green beans, East Texas creamy gravy

Aside from that hunk of fried goodness, those beans are dreamy!

📷

KING RANCH CHICKEN SPAGHETTI || Tillamook cheddar, green chiles, queso, tomato, sweet pepper, crisp tortilla strips

That King Ranch casserole you grew up loving in spaghetti form! I didn't think I would like this dish because of all the cheese and pasta, but I would definitely eat this again.

📷

SABINE PASS GUMBO || Shrimp, andouille, whole crab, chicken, long grain rice, file

So legit. I can't say I've ever had gumbo with seafood this fresh.

📷

"BIG TEX" GRILLED CHEESE || Braised short rib, gruyere, Tillamook cheddar, pickled red onion on sourdough

An elevated grilled cheese? Count me in!

📷

BIG BOY || Crisp bacon, caramelized onion, Tillamook cheddar, gruyere, b&b pickles, horseradish, and black pepper mayo

Crispy, smokey, what's not to like?

📷

MAC 'N BURGER || Crisp mac 'n cheese, American cheese, tomato, onion, iceberg b&b pickles, Lee's burger sauce

This burger is actually what brought us to State Fare. How can you turn down mac and cheese... in a burger? It hit the spot that's for sure.

DESSERTS

📷

SEASONAL BREAD PUDDING

Chocolate lovers, you're going to want to try this. There are three types of chocolate on this bad boy - dark, milk, and nutella!

📷

SUSAN'S CARROT CAKE

Straight from Petite Sweets! While a little dry, I couldn't help but find hints of different flavors hidden in each bite. Your taste buds are in for a treat with this dessert.
