Local Pho: Offbeat Spot for Vietnamese Cuisine in Sawyer Yards

Updated: Aug 5, 2019

Local Pho is nestled in Sawyer Yards, a community in the Historic First Ward that has quickly become a home for artistic and creative businesses, as well as some restaurants and breweries. As you might remember, we've visited various hot spots in the area, such as Shell Shack and Holler Brewery. Every time we were over there, I would notice Local Pho. It didn't look like your typical Vietnamese eatery, but it had "pho" in the name so I knew I needed to go check it out.

Months later, I finally got a chance to stop by. To my delight, the food was delicious and service was quick, making Local Pho a great lunch time destination.

Here's a run down of what I got to try off the menu and my recommendations!

BANH MI FRIES

Y'all know I cannot resist a loaded fry dish, so naturally I had to give this one a try. It has all the components of your typical banh mi, but instead of a baguette you get a huge stack of crispy fries. I would definitely recommend if you're a fry lover too or if you're not feeling a traditional banh mi.

CHICKEN WINGS

This is one of the newer additions to the menu. While lacking a tad in flavor, the outside is crisped to perfection and the inside is super juicy.

BANH MI THIT NUONG || Baguette served with grilled pork, mayonnaise, pickled carrots and daikons, cucumbers, jalapeños, cilantro, and black pepper

A classic choice for a filling and decently cheap meal! (The egg is an extra add-on.)

PHO TAI || Beef noodle soup with eye round steak

I really enjoyed the broth of their pho! Super rich and flavorful.

Overall, Local Pho was a great find. The location is excellent, being close to both Downtown and the Heights, eating is plentiful, and most importantly, the quality of the food is top notch.
